NEW: Air conditioning units have been installed to the main part of the house. They are in the large living room and two main bedrooms. These units also serve as heaters during winter months. The two back bedrooms do not get so hot in summer and are easily cooled by the fans available.
The property has recently been renovated into a 3 double bedroom house (plus one more bedroom with a baby/ toddler travel cot and foldaway bed to sleep a child or small adult). 2 bathrooms. Large living, kitchen/ dining room. It sleeps 6/7 people in comfort (+ a baby or toddler up to 3yrs).
All rooms are well-lit with windows and blinds or shutters. There are two roof terraces - on the 3rd floor the large terrace has panoramic views of the town, castle walls, or out towards the sea and hillsides. Enjoy breakfast, sunbathing, a glass of wine or dinner outside.
A cool entrance hallway opens onto the ground floor, where you will find the bedrooms. The two main double bedrooms have king-sized beds, with new firm mattresses, double wardrobes with long mirrors, bedside cabinets/ tables and lamps. These bedrooms overlook the tiny street and have two windows each, with shutters, external blinds and bars, so you can leave windows open quite safely.
Adjacent are the two bathrooms, which are internal. One has a walk-in shower and the other has a small bathtub, with shower over the bath. Both have washbasins and toilets, bathroom cabinets, plug for razors/ toothbrushes and extractor fans.
Beyond the bathrooms are two smaller rooms. One has twin-beds, with new firm mattresses, a bedside cupboard, hanging alcove, and lamp. The other has the travel cot, fold-away bed, high chair, and our own built-in storage cupboard. These two rooms at the back of the house enjoy skylights, that can be opened or closed, and are shaded by tailor-made blinds.
The black granite staircase leads up to the first floor, where you see the door that takes you out to the lower and upper terraces.
Here you will find the beautiful large living+ kitchen/dining room. This room has two windows that open onto the street with shutters and exterior blinds, so they can be left open for ventilation.
The living area has a large, grey 3-seater sofa, 3 reclining chairs and a fold-up chair for extra seating. A solid wooden coffee table, small bookcase (with a selection of books available) and a TV bench. The new 32” Samsung TV, has Spanish digital (Freeview) channels and will play any UK or US programmes in English. Google ChromeCast is attached to the TV and you can make use of your own remote appliances to view television or films. We use FilmOn for live UK TV and Netflix. Also a dvd player, with a good choice of UK dvds. The house has Wifi free with your rental.
The dining table seats six, with 6 matching chairs, and it can be extended to seat 8. The lovely new fitted white kitchen has ample cupboards and black marble worktops, which might inspire you to try some Spanish cooking.
The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, 3 ring ceramic electric hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge with freezer compartment, sink, drainer, toaster and kettle. The crockery, cutlery, glasses, and cooking pans are all our own, with everything you need to enjoy some fine dining – if you can keep away from the tapas bars and local restaurants!
An iron, ironing board, vacuum cleaner and five floor fans are also available. For winter rentals there is an electric radiator and a pellet stove in the living room, which really heats up the space on those chilly evenings.
The door to the terraces has a stable window that can be left open. On the lower terrace there is a sink, outside lights and space to dry clothes, towels and swimsuits on the portable dryer. There is also a suite of rattan furniture and a large storage box for the cushions, where you can relax in a more shady spot.
Up the metal staircase, you find the expansive upper terrace, with a picnic table and 6 chairs, 4 sunloungers with cushions. Plus there is a dark green umbrella and a beige free-standing parasol to protect you from too much sun. The views are spectacular and the atmosphere totally relaxing. There are lights and switches up on the top terrace.
PLEASE NOTE: The house and guests are looked after by property managers, Sara & Louis, who live locally and are very experienced in running holiday rentals. There is no extra charge for final cleaning, unless some damage is found to the house, furnishings or fittings.

The house is nestled among the narrow, winding streets, typical of the ‘barrio San Miguel’- the area surrounding the impressive Castillo de San Miguel, an ancient Moorish castle with its own fascinating museum and nearby Archaeological Museum. Close by is the Parque el Majuelo, botanical gardens, with one of Europe’s largest subtropical plant collections. The Loro Sexi, ornithological park, has over 120 different species of birds to view.
Just a 5 minute walk is the Plaza Constitucion (Town Hall Square) with delightful cafes, tapas bars and restaurants, as well as a chemist and, leading off the square, a myriad of tiny streets with a fantastic mix of clothes shops, boutiques, bodegas, bakeries, small vegetable and grocery shops.
Continue walking and you come down to the beaches (5 – 10 minute walk) – Playa Puerta Del Mar and Playa San Cristobal. Both beaches have long promenades with palm trees and tiled boardwalks. There are exercise areas on the beach, showers and toilets available. You can rent sun loungers from the local bars by the hour or day.
You’re never far from local cafes, restaurants (good value ‘menu of the day’), even bars and nightclubs open into the early hours of morning. This is truly 'Authentic Spain'.
OTHER LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Just a few minutes’ walk from the house, before you reach the Town Hall Square, is La Corrala bar and gourmet restaurant with excellent food and a varied menu. Every Wednesday, there is a Flamenco show which is a fun and entertaining way to spend an evening. Flamenco is offered in many of the local restaurants and sometimes you get an outside show in the squares.
There are numerous local festivals and fiestas at all times during the year, which create a wonderful carnival atmosphere. The Fiesta of Barrio San Miguel is towards the end of September and the surrounding streets are totally transformed with cafes, bars and live bands.
The weather in Almunecar (Costa Tropical) is noted for being warm and sunny, with long hot summers and even winter can be hospitable and pleasant to sit outside. The average temperature is 20C.
The colourful covered Municipal Market is packed with stalls selling fresh fish, meat, vegetables and fruit. Every Friday, there is an outdoor market in the town’s main car park and on Sundays a second-hand or flea market in the same place.
A very large Aquarium is in the centre of town. Also, for children, an Aqua Park (20 minutes’ walk) on the beach towards Playa Velilla, has water rides, pools, bars and restaurants.
The bus station is a 10 minute walk and offers cheap and very good services to surrounding towns and areas including: Malaga, Motril, Nerja, Almeria and Granada. You can get there by bus from Malaga airport and save the cost of a car hire or a taxi.
You don´t need to rent a car, but can take the long distance bus from central Malaga bus station, departures almost hourly. The one way fare is only about 7€ per adult. Hop on a shuttle bus from the airport, or it's a short taxi ride. The bus station is in the centre of Almunecar and from there it´s a ten minute walk to the house.
There are good, well-stocked, supermarkets in the town centre. Close to our house is a small local shop which opens early, closes in the afternoon, then is open again to 10pm. They stock basic essentials and bread.
EXPLORING THE AREA
Inland from Almunecar lies the Alpujarra National Park, where you can tour the pretty white villages, and visit the famous centre of water source Lanjaron.
Granada, the city and home of the world-famous Alhambra Palace, is just a 50 minute drive along a new motorway. Try to book your visit to the Alhambra online in advance, as it gets very busy in the high season, but well worth the visit.
Golf courses, skiing in the Sierra Nevada, are also nearby. Almunecar coastal waters offer great water sports and scuba diving is very popular.
La Herradura and Salobrena are typical unspoilt bays and there is an exclusive 500 berth marina at Marina del Este.
Nerja is a pretty village along the coast, famous for its spectacular stalactite caves. For the adventurous, try a trip up into the hills to the Pena Escrita Nature Park. It’s a tortuous, winding steep climb – not for the nervous driver! Once up there, you’ll be thrilled by the wildlife zoo where the animals live close to nature. The views are incredible.
ACCESS AND PARKING
The Castle area's streets are narrow, winding and hilly, so it’s not a suitable place for the disabled or infirm.
Our house can be reached by car but there is no immediate parking. For drop-off of luggage or shopping, it’s best to stop at the top of an adjacent street and transport everything into the house.
Street parking is available within walking distance, either on meters on local streets (pay on meters 9am - 2pm, then it's free). The main car park is free, except for Fridays during the market. Or there is a large underground car park on Paseo de Atillo with paid-for parking, by the day or longer periods.
You get plenty of exercise by walking around the town and there really is no need to drive, as everywhere is a 5 – 15 minute walk.
Double beds are king size. The 3 bedrooms sleep 6 people, plus there is a small 4th bedroom with travel cot (baby or toddler), and a fold-up bed (suitable for another child or small adult).
